Bowie's Station To Station is one of my three favourite records of his. The other two are Low and Outside, though I shall discuss the former, because I talk about Bowie's late 70's. The latter – my theory – transformed him into Bowie we cherish. Sure, his glam rock days caused many to notice him, yet most albums from Station to Station on showed the multitudes the early records merely hinted at. Low, in particular, remains an intriguing listen, one could consider that his detox record. Moreover, one is surprised at how organic the disc sounds despite the electronic shenanigans. The tune in the link, for instance, has a share of weird sonic elements, yet the reason the piece works? Bowie is backed by an incredibly tight band that collaborated with him before this.

If anybody wanted to write a crossover between L.M. Montgomery's books, here is a little help with the ages of the characters (@no-where-near-hero maybe it will be a tiny help for your fanfic):
Anne Shirley - born on 5th of March 1865
Gilbert Blythe - born in 1862 or 1863
James Matthew "Jem" Blythe - born in July 1893
Walter Cuthbert Blythe - born in 1894
Anne "Nan" and Diana "Di" Blythe - born in 1896
Shirley Blythe - born in 1888*
Bertha Marilla "Rilla" Blythe - born in 1900*
Gerald "Jerry" Meredith - born 1894
Faith Meredith - born 1895
Una Meredith - born 1896
Thomas Carlyle "Carl" Meredith - born 1897
Jims Anderson - born in August of 1914
Emily Byrd Starr - born on 19th of May 1888
Ilse Burnley - born in 1888 (probably)
Perry Miller - born in 1887
Frederick "Teddy" Kent - 1887 or 1888
Dean Priest - born in 1865
Patricia "Pat" Gardiner - born in 1913
Rachel "Rue" Gardiner - born in 1919
Winnifred "Winnie" Gardiner - born in 1910
Sidney "Sid" Gardiner - born in 1912
Joseph"Joe" Gardiner - born in 1908
Hilary Gordon - born in 1911
Elizabeth "Bets" Wilcox - born in 1913
David Kirk - born around 1893
Jane Stuart - born in May 1918 or 1919
Valancy Stirling* - born 1883**
Barney Snaith - born 1877**
Cecilia "Cissy" - born 1886**
Olive Stirling - born 1884**
Gay Penhallow - born in 1904***
Nan Penhallow - born in 1904***
Roger Dark - born in 1890***
Donna Dark - born between 1894 and 1896***
Virginia Powell - born between 1894 and 1896***
Peter Penhallow - born between 1888 and 1890***
Margaret Penhallow - born 1872***
Brian Dark - born 1916***
Hugh Dark - born in 1887***
Joscelyn Penhallow: born between 1889-1892***
*In both Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley Shirley is two years older than Rilla. But in Rilla of Ingleside, he turns eighteen few months before Rilla... it is pure chaos. Rilla was supposed to be nearly fourteen, according to the RV, in 1914, but she is nearly fifteen in RoI. So I apologize, but I had a lot of trouble here...
**The Blue Castle is the most difficult to place in time. It is set several years before it was published, and in my own opinion: before Tangled Web and Pat of Silver Bush. Why? Because of this reference: "This was before the day of bobs and was regarded as a wild, unheard-of proceeding—unless you had typhoid." (The Blue Castle). Bobs were already "in fashion" at the beginning of Pat of Silver Bush (so, in 1919, when Pat was six years old: it was said that Winnie wanted to have her hair bobbed) and in Tangled Web (which is set in 1922). Yet, the cars, motorboats and movie theaters were a rather common occurence in The Blue Castle's times. But... there might be an explanation. Valancy doesn't live on PEI, which might have been a little "behind" the rest of Canada, as far as modern technology went. It is my own personal opinion, but I think that it might be set just before the war, at the same time as the end Emily's Quest. I know that the clothes seem more "modern" in TBC, but Emily wore "a little sport suit" and dress that was described as followed "there was so little of it". Teddy and Perry both had cars, as sone of Ilse's cousins. I would say that the Blue Castle book might be set around 1912-1913. Still, the timeline is extremely elusive. Please, let me know, dear Blue Castle Book Club's members, what is your opinion? I think I have read some amazing discussion about TBC's timeline a long time ago, but if I remember correctly, everyone was certain that this novel was set post WWI (me included, until this very moment when I tried to place Pat and Tangled Web and remembered the "bob" quote). So I choose 1912 as the beginning of TBC, when Valancy was twenty-nine.
*** the ages of characters in Tangled Web:
"They were first cousins, who were born the same day and married the same day,--Donna to her own second cousin, Barry Dark, and Virginia to Edmond Powell--two weeks before they had left for Valcartier. Edmond Powell had died of pneumonia in the training camp, but Barry Dark had his crowded hour of glorious life somewhere in France." (Tangled Web).
"Virginia Powell, whose husband had been dead eight years and who was young and tolerably beautiful" (Tangled Web).
"Valcartier, Quebec was the primary training base for the First Canadian Contingent in 1914."
- from: https://www.warmuseum.ca/firstworldwar/history/going-to-war/canada-enters-the-war/training-at-valcartier/
So, from this I assumed that Virginia's husband died in 1914 (so Tangled Web is set in 1922-23). Gay is 18 at the beginning, so she would be born in 1904. If Donna and Virginia were 18-20 when they got married, they would be 26-28 (so still "young"). at the beginning. Peter was 14 when Donna was 8, so he'd be 32-34 at the beginning of the book (same age or a bit older than Roger). Hugh was 35 at the beginning. I guess Joscelyn was a bit younger- most of LMM's heroines are at least two years younger than their love interest. I'd say she might have been 20-23 when she got married, so she'd be around 30-33 at the beginning of the book. I would say Brian is about six years old - he doesn't seem to attend school yet, but is big enough to be sent to the harbour. Margaret Penhallow was about fifty at the beginning of the book.
So sorry that this post was rather long, but it was a great fun to write (even if it took me A LOT of time). Thank you for reading. Please, let me know if you agree. Any feedback will be very welcome!

Ep 297: The Ghost Ship Carroll A. Deering
"Like a ‘Flying Dutchman,’ the five-masted schooner Carroll A. Deering loomed through the mists about Diamond Shoals today, all sails set, but un-manned."  -- The Washington Herald, February 3, 1921
Description:
In 1921, a five-masted schooner emerged from the mists of North Carolina’s treacherous coast - a floating tomb devoid of life. Eleven souls had vanished without a trace, leaving behind an eerie tableau of abandonment. We delve into this chilling mystery tonight and attempt to unravel a web of bizarre clues: inexplicably damaged equipment, missing shore boats, and whispers of aberrant crew behavior from passing ships. Was it a bloodthirsty mutiny? Ruthless pirates? A clandestine rum-running operation gone awry? Or perhaps something far more sinister lurks in human nature’s depths - or beyond? The Carroll A. Deering is a haunting mystery, reminding us that some secrets of the sea may never be fully uncovered, leaving our imaginations to run wild with unsettling possibilities.

The Why Files: Operation Podcast
Like many podcasts, the Why Files covers conspiracies, aliens, time travel, and ancient civilizations. Some people are very serious about this stuff. They believe every detail, even if the details don't quite add up. Others tear the stories apart. What fun is that? The Why Files is different. First, they explore the mystery, and then together, we separate fact from fiction and see what's left. Some legends can't be debunked. And those are their favorites. The Why Files is available on Spotify or anywhere you get your podcasts. The X Files said the truth is out there, but the Why Files says the truth is right here.

Double 12" Spin #38 = Earl 16 & Chalice =
Tumblr media
This 38th edition of Double 12" Spin features Earl 16, a singer with a vast body of work and an extensive history in the music industry, as well as Chalice, the Jamaican reggae band that was primarily active in the 1980s and experienced a brief resurgence in the late 1990s. Earl 16, whose birth name is Earl John Daley, was born in Kingston on May 9, 1958. He embarked on his musical career as a member of the Flaming Phonics, a group that unfortunately did not achieve widespread recognition. He then joined Boris Gardiner's band, the Boris Gardiner Happening, an experience that proved invaluable in his artistic development. His career breakthrough came in 1975 with the song Malcolm X, written by his friend Winston McAnuff and produced by Joe Gibbs. Throughout the remainder of the 1970s, Earl 16 maintained his association with Boris Gardiner, a prominent figure in the Jamaican music landscape. This collaboration provided him with opportunities to connect with influential producers such as Derrick Harriott and Lee "Scratch" Perry. He released several singles during this period, and toward the close of 1979, he began working with producer and artist Mikey Dread, who was then gaining notoriety for his radio show Dread At The Controls on the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation. Earl 16's debut album, Reggae Sound, was subsequently released on Dread's label. The following year saw the release of Super Duper, produced by Ranking Joe, the deejay who also worked as a producer. In the ensuing years, Earl 16 frequently collaborated with producer Roy Cousins, resulting in approximately three albums. He also worked with Earl Morgan of The Heptones on the album Shining Star. In 1985, Coxsone Dodd released Showcase, a compilation of tracks Earl 16 had recorded for him over the preceding years. In 1985, following a period spent in the United States, Earl 16 relocated to the United Kingdom, where he currently resides. In the UK, he began working with the Mad Professor, which led to the release of the critically and commercially successful album Babylon Walls. He continued his collaborations with various UK producers, including Gussie P. He also joined Dreadzone, the UK electronica/reggae band, as one of their vocalists. In 1988, he achieved significant chart success with his cover version of Simply Red's Holding Back The Years a song that has become arguably his most recognizable and popular track. Earl 16 remains active in the music industry, collaborating with numerous European production houses to create high-quality recordings. Recent examples of his work include The Fittest for JahSolidRock Music and Natty Farming for Roberto Sánchez, as well as his 2022 album Higher Than I.Turning our attention to the second 12-inch single, we feature the Jamaican group Chalice, a band that emerged in the early 1980s. The group's formation was initiated by drummer Phanso Wilson and bassist Errol Moore, who were later joined by guitarist Wayne Armond, keyboardists Howard Messam and Desi Jones, saxophonist Dean Stephens, and lead singer Trevor Roper, among other members. Chalice cultivated a sophisticated musical style that blended reggae with elements of pop, rock, and soul. This fusion, while innovative, often failed to resonate with purist reggae fans, resulting in a lack of widespread recognition within that specific community. This relative lack of respect persisted despite the band's lyrics frequently addressing social issues. Chalice's 1981 debut album, Blasted, featured two hit singles, Good To Be There and I Still Love You. Renowned for their dynamic and high-energy live performances, the band garnered local and international acclaim. However, this vibrant energy was often not fully captured on their studio recordings. Their 1983 album, Standard Procedure, also yielded several hits, including Can't Dub and I'm Trying. Chalice toured extensively internationally and released more than twelve albums throughout their career. The band dissolved in 1996, following a period marked by several lineup changes. Approximately ten years later, a reformed version of the band reunited and released the album Let It Play in 2010. This particular 12-inch single was released internationally on the German Ariola label, which aimed to promote Chalice as a mainstream reggae act. The single features extended versions of what are arguably their most well-known tracks, Can't Dub and I'm Trying. Read the full article

MARDI 9 MAI 2023 (Billet 1 / 4)

Anne & Gilbert the Musical is going to be livestreamed tomorrow on the Anne and Gilbert Facebook page. It checks off some of the things on your list.
things we were robbed of in awae:
gilbert saying "anne-girl"
the redmond icon herself, philippa gordon
roy gardner, who was so Tragically Handsome and Melodramatic that he wrote anne poetry, but couldn't get a joke she made. which canonically led her to compare him unfavourably to gilbert. if that isn't feelings realisation then idk what is
season 4
season 5
that's it that's the list
